CHAPTER 14
After leaving Linc to do the yard work, Brigid went over to their house. There was something on her mind that she couldnât seem to shake. Whoever the blackmailer was, they had to have been on foot. Or, at the very least, ridden a bike and hidden it nearby. Otherwise, she figured Trevor probably would have heard the sound of a bicycle or car going down the street, and most likely would have noted some sort of a sound that indicated someone was leaving the scene.
Cottonwood Springs wasnât a huge town, but it was big enough someone wouldnât want to have to walk from one end to the other. Brigid needed to figure out how close the blackmailing victims lived to each other. Assuming the numbers on the backs of the envelopes were in the order theyâd been dropped off, she decided sheâd start from there. At least it was something to look into.
Sitting down at her computer, she pulled up a map of Cottonwood Springs and looked closely at it. Maybe having a visual would help her, considering sheâd tried to use her imagination, but she wasnât sure she had the map completely right in her mind. It was easy to drive around, but trying to imagine how many blocks were between different addresses had proved to be a bit more difficult than she thought it would be.
Checking her phone to make sure she had it right, she began to type in the addresses and then created markers on the map. Eventually, she found everyoneâs address and numbered them accordingly.
She sat back and began to think about how the blackmailer had gone about this. If she could figure out how theyâd been able to drop off the envelopes, maybe she could find them. There was always a chance someone had spotted them while they were going from house to house.
âHmm,â she said as she looked at the addresses again. Sheâd labeled each of them with the number that was on the back of the envelope, so sheâd know which was which. But as she sat there staring at them, there didnât seem be any rhyme or reason to them. Although they were clustered in somewhat the same area, it was still a fairly wide area.
If the numbers were in the order in which theyâd been dropped off, whoever had done it certainly had a strange system. Number one was on one street while number two was a couple of blocks over. Number three was back on the same street as number one, but down quite a few blocks.
It was haphazard enough that Brigid was starting to think there must have been another reason for the numbers. But what? What other reason could they have had for putting the faint numbers on the back of each envelope? She needed to think about that a little more. More than likely it only meant something to the blackmailer, and it would take time to figure out what that was.
She knew she
